Julien Lachal (1980, Lyon, France) is a versatile artist. As a practitioner in architecture and urbanism, he has been exploring for over 20 years the urban, climatic, and social changes within our contemporary society.
Concurrently, he delves into the poetic realm of widespread disruption as a multi-instrumentalist sound artist and experimenter, engaging in various stage and audiovisual creations. His work spans from conceptual minimalism to free-jazz.
He places the concept of entropy at the core of his work, whether through sound practice involving improvisation and field recording or through visual arts such as drawing, video, and cartography. His approach is rooted in mesology (the study of environments), which he invokes in his works concerning encounters with fragility, aiming to somehow reestablish a friendly connection with the micro-local and the living things.

” Probably one of the most talented bands I’ve had the pleasure and honor to play with. Very different, original and brillant. And full of laughter ! They are a real ice breaker ! ”
— PURA FÉ
” The question of technique, architecture, or music stands at the very core of Julien Lachal’s thought—at times the object of critique, at others, of poetic reverie. It serves as a gateway through which the creative process opens itself to the phenomenological play of memory, and thus, to the very possibility of history.”
— S.DADOUR, ARCHISTORM
” The sophisticated arsenal of these perfectionists effortlessly elevates their first attempt into the antechamber of a masterpiece. A true muslin of contemporary jazz. ”
— R.LAPASSADE, BUZZ
” A curious work—terribly alluring, resonant. A true invitation to serenity and harmony. ”
— VERSION FEMINA, PAGES CULTURES
” Poets are generally more discreet than painters or musicians. Surrealists. From the shadows comes your whisper… invincible and unclassifiable. ”
— T.DELGAUDINNE, L’AVENIR
” A theatrical, musical, and visual work that delves into the origins of political cabaret… echoing, unmistakably, with the present moment. “
— LES MARRONNIERS
” By casting their Humanifesto of the Ordinary Body into the stagnant waters of sanitized musical productions shaped by neoliberal globalization, Antiquarks shows that other worlds are possible—worlds of hybridity, of plural, open, and dialoguing humanities. ”
— P.CORCUFF, SOCIOLOGIST
” A powerful sensitivity embodied in unique and demanding creations. ”
— A.PERDRIX, DIRECTOR
” Through its dual nature—both documentary and artistic—his work contributes to a heightened awareness of our embodied, sensory, and political condition, enriching our understanding of what it means to belong to the world. ”
— E.CURIEN, DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH AT ENSAN
” Most philosophical, Igloolik Ultima references the polar regions, exploring their confrontation with the disruptions caused by climate change.”
— C.DELVAUX, DÉTENTE JARDIN
” Free from any unnecessary chatter, the trio immediately captivates with its freshness, sincerity, and desire to step off the beaten path. Each composition shines with a distinctly joyful brilliance. ”
— F.MARCIANO, JAZZMAN
