I explore the poetic dimensions of widespread disruption as a multi-instrumental sound artist (working with wind instruments, percussion, piano, double bass, and modular synthesis) and as an experimenter involved in numerous stage and audiovisual creations. My work spans conceptual minimalism, free jazz, and sonic experimentation in relation to space and place.

In parallel, I also practice architecture and urban planning, with over 20 years of engagement in the evolving urban, climatic, and social dynamics of contemporary society.

I place the notion of entropy at the heart of my spatial and sonic practice—whether through improvisation, field recording, or visual arts such as drawing, video, and cartography.

My approach is rooted in mesology (the study of environments), which I draw upon in my work on encountering fragility, in an effort—however modest—to reimagine a caring, localized relationship with the living world.

” The question of technique, architecture, or music stands at the very core of Julien Lachal’s thought—at times the object of critique, at others, of poetic reverie. It serves as a gateway through which the creative process opens itself to the phenomenological play of memory, and thus, to the very possibility of history.”
— S.DADOUR, ARCHISTORM
